Many valuable pathways after high school

The traditional college path, as you know, includes going to college and getting a four year degree. However, this traditional plan may not be suitable for every student and that’s okay! There are several non-traditional college paths one can take.

This will be a list and description of a few different alternate college paths. Keep in mind that this is not an entirely comprehensive list, use it to get ideas about a good college path for you.

Two Year Degree (AA or AS)

Pursuing a two year degree is good because it lets one study a career interest and quickly get a job relating to their degree, only having to do schooling for two years. The downfall is that you may be competing with people who have four year degrees (bachelor’s), they are usually seen as more qualified. Furthermore, some jobs in finance, business, accounting, etc. typically require a bachelor’s degree as a minimum.

One Year Training

Another option is a year long training. This is good for people who know what they want to do, it’s better for things like trades. One can learn techniques for creating things, writing, painting, and trades such as plumbing, welding, carpentry, and electrician etc. It does not work as well for technical jobs that require lots of learning and memorization because one would be better off building their knowledge and then getting a job relating to what they studied.

Trade School

Trade school is similar to training, except it’s more organized. One can learn a specific trade in trade school, most of one’s time will be spent practicing their trade and becoming as skilled as possible in it. The risk to this, is to make sure one’s trade is in high demand, it can put the trade student in a tough spot. Examples are Culinary School, Aeronautical Technician, Hair and Nail technician, and etc..

Certifications Some people use other means to show their skills, this includes certifications! Instead of attending school for long periods of time, one may choose to show their knowledge through certifications. Certifications can come from taking courses, comprehensive tests. Many large and reputable companies offer certifications. For example, Microsoft has several MTA tests on various computer topics. Before deciding that college is overrated, though, look over what employers accept only certifications. It’s usually the cheaper option, but less employers will accept only certifications.

Gap Year

Gap Year is a year-long break that one takes before college or career choices are made to partake in personal development and educational activities. Typically students will travel during this time and/or find work to save money for college. This is a good option for students that aren’t quite sure what they want to do yet. Taking a gap year does not mean one must attend college afterwards, any of the non-traditional college paths are options as well!

Now that we’ve gone over some of the most common non-traditional college paths, you may have a better idea of what works for you. Take time to think up a plan, ask friends and family for advice, and even look for professional help on deciding what path will lead you to success and fulfillment.
